Burghead was once a Pictish Fort, the largest in Scotland, attacked and settled by the Vikings who were in turn ousted by the Scots. It remains famous for the annual ‘Burning of the Clavie’ which takes place on the 11^th January and which has its roots in Pagan fire festivals.
